Digital has nearly absolutely replaced film in the casual set and is making inroads among professionals and artists, but that doesn’t mean film is being absolutely forgotten. Kodak and Vivitar haven’t forgotten their roots, and are creating a new film camera aimed at universities teaching “traditional photography.” They state it’ll be similar to the V3000.
I’m not sure I like how they refer to film photography as something of a folk tradition (I’ve still got a Canon FT and some T-Max 400 in the fridge), but I’m glad they’re keeping the fire.

python-pentagon.jpgWe thought this was pretty obvious, but after the Pentagon discovered Google Maps’ 360-degree panoramic coverage of Fort Sam Houston Army base in Texas, they have officially banned them from “filming inside and making detailed studies of US military bases.” How the heck the army allowed automobiles with cameras mounted on them inside their army bases is yet to be known. Next, CIA officially bans Google from snooping into their secret cake recipes database. [BBC News]

iphonespore.jpgI’ve got good news and better news. The good news is that the iPhone is getting multitouch games that use the accelerometer and each bell and whistle of the iPhone for controls. The better news? Developers such as EA and Sega are on board. EA is bringing the insanely anticipated game Spore to it. All 18 levels. Yes, this is real, and it’ll be released in September. Also, Sega is bringing Super Monkey Ball, and the App Store looks like it’ll have a bunch of casual games available as well. Does this bring the iPhone up to DS and PSP levels? We’ll have to see just how these games look and play, but it’s pretty exciting stuff. UPDATE: iPhone Spore coming in September, says Kotaku.

If you’re like me, you love yourself some home theater setup, and Blu-ray is likely your next buy, if you haven’t already purchased a player. Samsung been playing both sides of the court and was set to release a duo HD-DVD/Blu-ray player, but now has wisely decided against it.

Samsung has always been a backer of Blu-ray, and the inclusion of HD-DVD in the now-cancelled BD-UP5500 Duo HD was a hedge, but now the future is Blu-ray for Samsung.

In an official statement, Samsung told us:

Samsung has always believed that Blu-ray was the format best-positioned to win based on studio support and the format’s abilities. Now that Blu-ray has been chosen as the next-generation format, the consumer can move forward with confidence and enjoy the experience that Blu-ray offers.

Samsung believes that a multi-format player like the current BD-UP5000 Duo HD Player (Duo) offers the best and only solution for consumers that want access to all available High-Definition (HD) titles in the short term. It remains a practical solution, but the window of opportunity is smaller than it was before. In light of current announcements, Samsung will not introduce the BD-UP5500 Duo HD Player.”

Very diplomatic, and also very telling. Now go forth, and purchase!

For Help-Key this week (now on Thursday’s, just like LOST), I’d planned to show you how to Jailbreak a 16GB iPod Touch, the one thing the automatic Jailbreaking apps can’t do yet, but I ended up bricking mine. Fortunately, I found a video that details exactly how to do it, and it seems to work fine. While I continue to try to reset mine to factory condition, please enjoy the above video with a few tips from me after the jump.

You’ll need to have your iPod in Jailbroken 1.1.2 mode, which you can learn how to do here.

Make sure you’ve got your iPod Touch plugged into a USB port and iTunes is disabled. This is where I failed, my battery died mid-way through the process. Don’t be like me, I’m not a roll model.

Also, make sure you’ve got a reliable internet connection. The downloads can take awhile, but the faster and more noise-free your connections are, the easier this will be.

It helps if you have a cold beer handy.

I’m going to try again, I’ll report back when it’s done.
