By Indian law, mobile devices in that country have to be capable of being monitored and their transmissions intercepted by the government. So it was kind of a awkward situation when the megacorp Tata applied for a license to set up a BlackBerry network. Why? Because the BlackBerry services are encrypted, and at least some are based in Canada, where RIM is the law, and will not submit to interception.
The gov’t refused Tata the license at first, but it is quickly turning into a can of worms type situation as once again privacy and security butt heads. Good thing that’s not a problem in the USA! If they can’t tap your phone they’ll just throw you into a black van and electrify you until you reveal the content of your suspicious IMs.

Good morning CrunchGear readers. Can I get you some coffee? Maybe some gadget news from around the World wide web? Take your time getting up — let’s just ease into our Friday here, hmm-kay? How’d you sleep last night?
I like the idea of the glo Pillow and I think I sleep lightly enough that this would be able to wake me up on its own without needing to rely on an alarm clock as well. It “uses an LED fabric substrate below the surface to wake the user using light,” which starts glowing 40 minutes before your designated wake-up time.
It’s currently a prototype but it still managed to wrangle a spot on Time’s Ideal Inventions of 2007 list. Hopefully the pillow itself is actually comfortable.

A fierce battle is brewing between Boeing and Raytheon to become the main supplier of unmanned aerial automobiles for the US Navy and Marine Corps. Currently, Boeing holds that title with their battle-tested ScanEagle drone. However, Raytheon’s updated Killer Bee design is ready for sale, and the company claims that their aircraft has advantages over its competitor like more room for payloads, more than 100 miles of range, infrared feeds, and guide precision munitions with an on-board laser designator.
It sounds impressive, but with Boeing’s ScanEagle having already proven itself, it won’t be an easy sell. But if it ever came down to aesthetics, the Killer Bee would win hands down. It looks menacing, like some sort of underwater predator. A decision on the matter should be ready by June or July of this year with a rollout planned for 2001. [Popular Mechanics]

Polaroid is staying in the instant photo biz with the ZINK printer. Keep it in your pocket, and when you’ve got an image you want to print, just send it to the tiny printer from your camera to have a regular-sized, sticky print in just under a minute. If you’re old school, you can shake it while it comes out.
It connects via USB or Bluetooth. The ink isn’t inkjet, meaning it’s more water resistant (and hopefully less expensive). We’re going to try to get a demo unit of this sexy box for sure. Hit the link to see a video of the device in action.
