Intel promised that their Atom chips (click here if you don’t know what the hell an Intel Atom chip is) will bring us cheaper computers great for surfing the web and general, lighter task loads. But I think I speak for the whole room when I say, how cheap is “cheaper?”
A standard PC setup with DVD drive (and we’re assuming with monitor) would run just $199 to $250. Intel calls the system a “Nettop,” and it will use the Atom Centrino processor to run Vista without Aero, XP or Linux (depending on target price and intended application).
A laptop with the same specs won’t run much more, estimated at only $250 to $300.
But given the inexpensive price of many full-blown Core 2 Duo laptops and desktops, it’s hard to see these moderate price breaks ushering in an Atom revolution. For developing countries and educational purposes, on the other hand, the Atom is a tad more exciting. [pcworld]

ExtremeTech added two new 1TB hard drives to its terabyte HDD roundup, the Hitachi A7K1000 (around $350) and the Samsung HD103UJ (around $260). No, those numbers mean nothing to me, either. The long and short of it is that the Samsung drive represents the best value of the bunch, coming in at the lowest price of all seven (ET had tested five before these two new ones)—”we’d certainly advocate it for most standard desktop environments requiring large capacities.” Can’t beat that.
You’ll notice I made it through this whole post without amateurishly mentioning, “loz u can has lots of pr0n now1″ I care too much to do that to y’all.

HTC’s CEO, Peter Chou, talked a bit about the eee Personal computer and the iPhone along with the future of WinMo on HTC handhelds. The takeaway? He doesn’t see the eee as a competitor to the company’s misicule Shift and that the iPhone is pretty darn hot — not as hot as an HTC exec on a mission!
On Android:
Google is an Internet company so they are very good at the Internet experience. We’ve been working with Google for nearly three years. Even before Google purchased Android, we had conversations with Andy Rubin. We think the mobile World wide web experience is horrible now in devices and we can now try innovating in this area. We are excited for the opportunity to work with Google since they’ve an in-depth knowledge of the Internet.
Peter — can I call you Peter? — WinMo is a pig and no matter how many pearls you dress it in, it’s still a pig. Run far and fast with Android into the upper reaches of Nokia+Symbian synergy.

Envision, if you will, stripping a radio of all its buttons and dials and replacing them with a set of scales. Now envision changing the station or frequency on this radio by placing rocks on specific areas of the scale. The more rocks you place, the higher the volume and so on. Yeah…its never gonna happen. The idea behind this Natural Radio concept is that you would have “organic control” over the radio, but I like my gadgets like I like my fruit—big and shiny. Organics just don’t cut it. I love Rock Band and I love that they keep releasing songs for it. However, lately they’ve sucked. Last week was pretty bad, and the week before that was all Grateful Dead. I hate the Grateful Dead.
This week’s a tiny better, as Harmonix has announced the Earache Thrash Pack, a three-pack including Blinded by Fear by At the Gates, Thrasher by Evile, and D.O.A. by the Haunted. They all come out Thursday next week for 440 MS points for the pack or 160 points each, or $5.49 on PS3 for the pack or $1.99 each.
For a complete list of what’s been released, check out the game’s Wikipedia entry.
