Synology’s new SATA NAS servers offer up to 4TB storage capacity and Synology is claiming they’re the fastest non-PC RAID 5 NAS servers there are. The desktop Disk Station DS508 takes five hot-swappable drives, while the rack-style Rack Station RS408 fits in four drives for up to 3TB RAID 5 capacity.

The RS408RP is the same, but has backup power supply in case of power outage. Users supply their own drives. All have 49MB/second read, 30MB+/sec write speeds and have 8W CPU power consumption, making them much more eco-friendly than similar systems which draw up to 80W.

While they’re aimed at small businesses, the fast speeds mean they may well appeal to gamers with powerful setups. The desktop DS508 is available in June for $1,029.95, the rack versions for $1,499.95 and $1,799.95 from July. [Synology]

If you wanted a sure sign that the Orwell-ization of Great Britain is underway, then look no further than this. Lollipop ladies, those kindly old women who man the main roads next to school, similar to the US crossing guard, have been issued with video cameras to record lollipop rage—as school-side road rage is known.

The cameras, which record traffic coming from both the front and the back, mounted on the lollipop lady’s cap, and attached to an Archos portable DVR, have been developed by a British firm, Routesafe. Several local authorities have invested in the technology to counter the increasingly aggressive behavior on British roads.

“It’s unbelievable that we’ve to take this action,” says the chairman of the Local Government Association’s transport board, “but the lives of children are at risk from increasing numbers of drivers who are so selfish that they’re willing to put lives at risk by refusing to cease for 30 seconds at a school crossing.” Miscreants will be fined the sterling equivalent of $2,000 and be given three points on their licenses.

All of this raises the question: what is next for the CCTV say that Britain has become? I’m betting on Restroom attendants with cameras to make sure you don’t abuse the soap or toilet paper, and school dinner ladies with serving-spoon cams that make sure that “ver kidz” are eating their greens. Alcatel-Lucent, a telecommunications equipment maker, announced this day that it posted its fifth straight quarterly loss. The company lost 181 million euros ($282 million) compared to a loss of 8 million euros a year earlier, when profits were boosted by the sale of businesses to Thales SA. Revenues were down 3.86 billion euros ($6.02 billion) compared with 3.88 billion euros from last year.

Alcatel-Lucent expects overall revenue for 2008 to decline by 2% to 5%. The company blames the loss on a weak dollar and lower spending by operators.

The first-quarter numbers sent shares of the company down 6.5% to sell at 4.2 euros ($6.5).

Alcatel-Lucent predicts that global communications equipment and related services will be flat in 2008. Chief Financial Officer Hubert de Pesquidous blames the worsening economic climate.

“While the long-term prospects for the industry are positive, the current macroeconomic environment remains uncertain, leading the company to continue to be prudent in its market assumptions,” Alcatel-Lucent stated in a statement.

Alcatel-Lucent is in the middle of a company restructuring that might cut up to 12,500 jobs. The company cut 6,700 jobs in 2007. Alcatel-Lucent shares have lost about 10% of their value this year, after losing more than half their value in 2007.

Marchex, a company that delivers local on the web advertising and local content, announced today that it has extended its advertising strategy to the mobile market. Marchex has entered into agreements with mobile advertising providers AdMob, Ringleader Digital and 4INFO.

Marchex’s VoiceStar subsidiary will deliver call tracking services to all three companies. VoiceStar will enable the advertiser providers to validate the effectiveness and return on investment of their mobile advertising networks and provide their advertisers with analytics to help them optimize their mobile advertising campaigns.

Marchex’s call tracking enables mobile advertising providers to: (i) track the calls generated by advertisements on their network, (ii) determine exactly which advertisements delivered the calls, (iii) track and report key information including the duration, time of day and geographic location of callers, and (iv) record the calls. Marchex makes this information available to the mobile advertising provider through its reporting interface.

“Marchex is focused on partnerships with leading aggregators of local advertisers across all channels: on the internet, offline, and mobile,” stated John Keister, Marchex President and COO. “We believe that the mobile advertising opportunity is significant and is poised to realize tremendous growth over the next five years. Our call tracking and pay-per-phone-call abilities provide a significant advantage for Marchex in the mobile search advertising market.”

“We are excited to bring new tools and technologies that will provide our advertising customers with results-focused advertising solutions,” said Omar Hamoui, Founder and CEO AdMob. “By linking the browsing experience of the mobile web with the communications abilities of mobile phones, AdMob continues to deliver a powerful new tool for advertisers. Marchex’s call-based advertising services and suite of analytic tools enable us to better monetize our inventory and enable our advertisers to maximize the return on investment for their mobile advertising campaigns.”

cruzerhacks.jpg You know how in cop shows they seize deviants’ computers and bring them back to the lab for some good ol’ latex gloved analysis to prove how obviously guilty or sick the suspect is? That’s old hat. Microsoft’s latest treat for law enforcement is COFEE (Computer On the internet Forensic Evidence Extractor), a USB drive that’ll cut through whatever flimsy security miscreants have slapped on their personal in a flash, and then automatically examine the dirty bits the cops need to bust their ass, from world wide web activity to stored data, no pwnage skillz or trips to the lab needed. Microsoft’s giving the wonder tube to lawmen for free, and 2,000 officers in 15 countries are already using it. But will it work on Macs? [Seattle Times, Thanks M]

Most parody videos are lame in the sense that they take one joke and stretch it to 60 seconds, but Lenovo’s one joke actually works when properly executed. Not to spoil anything, but it’s a send-up of the MacBook Air in favor of Lenovo’s own X300. According to Fake Steve, it’s been sent around to component suppliers and contract manufacturers in China, no doubt eliciting much har hars as they forward it on to their friends. Update: Looks like TmoNews has more evidence and it appears T-Mobile will be rolling out 3G service here in NYC on Thursday. Now I really need to get a hold of a 3G device for T-Mo.
