According to someone with authority, the OpenMoko Freerunner phone platform will be selling for $399. There was originally a lux version planned, but they decided to stick with one model and snip until it went below four hundred bucks. It should look somewhat like the Neo-type phone pictured at left. I’ve always been excited for this OpenMoko to get their gear out there on the market, and I’m glad to see movement on that front. Despite the various changes they’d to make to bring the price down, the Freerunner supports a ton of stuff - powered USB, graphics acceleration, GPS and wi-fi - so I definitely want to get my hands on one as soon as they’re good to go. Pic of the GX-20 Barney Britton of Amateur Photographer is reporting out of Seoul, Korea that Samsung is actively working on the development of a full-frame CMOS sensor to be implemented into DSLRs. This is incredible for two reasons: 1) A full-frame sensor is what, I think, old-school film photographers are waiting for so they have the ability to switch to digital 2) It will be a Pentax lens mount, which means my 50mm and 28mm will be kickass and that means Pentax DSLRs will inherit the full-frame sensor since Samsung sensors are already being used in Pentax DSLRs. Unfortunately, it’s only in the design stage and Samsung is tight lipped about whether or not this will become a reality.
Action figure customizer extraordinaire Sillof is at it again, following up his Steampunk Star Wars collection with a World War II themed line of figurines. Choice pieces include Han Solo in a bomber jacket, holding a German Mauser (which incidentally was the base for the prop used in the Star Wars movies) and a gorgeous rendition of a Stormtrooper, outfitted in armor and burlap. The gallery is below. [Raving Toy Mania]
Those of you who have always wanted to move around Second Life while actually moving around might be in luck. Linden Lab Chair Mitchell Kapor has teamed up with 3DV Systems to show the Zcam, an inexpensive video camera that can judge when you’re leaning forward and backwards. No news yet on whether it can also sense when you’re thrusting — sorry, Second Life sex fans.
The camera works by translating hand and body motions into an avatar’s movements in Second Life. Tip a bit forward and the avatar will walk, tip faster and the avatar will run, tip too fast and you’ll fall down (presumably). The included demo also shows the camera translating various movements into jumping, flying and landing “gracefully.”
Low-priced 3D cameras, such as the Zcam, won’t only make playing Second Life more immersive than other peripherals out there , it’ll also absolutely rethink human-computer interactions, Kapor stated.
Well, we’ll see about that. All I know is, if years from now I’m suddenly standing in a Los Angeles parking lot half naked and swinging away at things with my katana thanks to a particularly crazy bar fight in a virtual reality world - I’ll know who to blame. [New York Times]
According to English Russia, this special PC is used to work on fuel “connected directly to the car’s gas tank.” Hmmm. Apparently “it analyzes the say of the fuel and diagnoses the overall condition of the vehicle, while consuming some gas fluid.” Possibly even without detonating and killing everyone nearby. There are more photos in the gallery, shedding more light on the thing, but there’s no monitor, keyboard or mouse, and you never really see the drives in action either. Even the backside looks something fishy, and there’s no obvious combustion engine either. What’s your expert view? And what are the chances that this whole brilliant scheme will at some point combust all to hell? [English Russia]

As we approach the game’s April 29 release date, Rockstar keeps adding and adding content to the Grand Theft Auto IVWeb site. A couple of new radio stations were added either last night or the night before (I try to check the site one a day, because I’m a dork), including Electro Choc (electronic/dance music) and Liberty City Hardcore (punk nonsense). There’s also a call-in radio show “The Men’s Room with Bas and Jeremy,” who look awfully like Opie & Anthony. I know they’re supposed to be in the game (they’ve admitted as much in current days), but I have no idea if “The Men’s Room” is actually them.
Probably the only game I’ve looked forward to since junior high.
As the Second Coming of the JesusPhone looms over the horizon, the rumor pace starts to accelerate, with people digging in the dirt to try to get any clues about what’s awaiting in this incarnation of Apple’s cellphone. StuffTV is now reporting that—just like Jason wanted—Nike+ will definitely come to the iPhone in a big way, while code detectives have found strings that hint at support of Bluetooth stereo headphones, GPS support, and other iPhone seeeeeecrets:
First, StuffTV went to Nike’s HQ in Oregon and got “official” word on Nike+ iPhone from the winged footwear maker. The fully exploit the graphic capabilities of the iPhone, Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity to provide Nike+ applications to go, including the Nike+ Coach feature. No surprises here, as previous strings found in the code of the iPhone 1.2.0 beta firmware talked about Nike+. According to Greek iPhone site “IPhone Hellas,” however, those strings are gone from the latest version. They, on the other side, found the following:
• There’s as string that says “HeadphonesBT”—as opposed to the current “HeadsetBT”— as well as “RoleA2DP” which could indicate Bluetooth stereo headphones support in this release. • There’s a string called “RoleGPS” which may indicate GPS support. • New “RoleRemote” string may indicate… using the iPhone as a remote for a computer or the AppleTV via Wi-Fi? Who knows. • There’s a mention to Printer in the Library directory. • There’s also a string that states
‘BRICKED_AND_SIM_LOCKED_STRING BrickedDevice Ignoring request to unlock because we’re blocked or bricked ‘
