Did you know that Lenovo makes phones? We don’t hear about’em very often on this side of the Pacific, but it turns out that they actually have a whole friggin’ lot of’em.
The newest addition is the Lenovo P990, a dual-band GMS/GPRS phone being offered over in China. Besides the novelty of the brand, there isn’t much you couldn’t find in a handset locally: 240320 screen 3″ display, a 2 megapixel shooter, the same Wolfson audio chips used in iPods until Apple switched it up early 2008, and GPS via SIRF III chips. It does support both Chinese and English with handwriting recognition, if that’s something you’re looking for.
Plus, if it’s anything like the IBM Lenovo Thinkpad my family has owned for around a decade, you could probably use it to crack walnuts and drop-measure abysmal depths without denting it.

Fring has a thing for Nokia as of late, it seems. It wasn’t too long ago that they added N810 support; then two days ago, they added support for the Nokia E71. Now they’ve gone and added the Nokia E66 to the list. I’d point out that there are other handsets Fring can be adding support for, but it seems like they’ve already got most of them covered.
If you’re looking for a way to Skype, MSN, ICQ, Google Talk, SIP, Twitter, AIM or Yahoo IM on your E66, head over to Fring’s download page.

Yikes. I’d envision that heads are going to roll over at Sprint HQ over this one. BGR managed to get their hands on a presentation outlining everything Sprint’s currently got planned until the middle of 2009.

The main morsel in the slides is the BlackBerry 9350i, a Nextel Direct Connect ready BlackBerry with Curve like aesthetics. In addition to its iDEN friendliness, it’s got WiFi, GPS, running OS 4.6 right off the bat. According to the road map, it should show up sometime in Q4 of 08.
Everything else seems to be fairly run of the mill: a couple Motorola flips, a new Samsung music phone, and a few Sanyo iDEN handsets.
For the complete run through, check out the full presentation over at BGR.

Oh, RAZR series. How I loathe you. You’re unsightly from every angle, your keypad is trash - yet, the fact that every carrier gives you away for beads and dirt means you’re in the hands of every soccer mom and sorority girl on the planet.
Someone got their hands on the next in this series of trashphones, and sent a bunch of shots over to PhoneArena. Not surprisingly, it looks like just about every other RAZR ever made.
It’ll have a 2 megapixel shooter, a QVGA primary display, and the same touch-sensitive layout as the V9m. Expect this one to hit Sprint’s shelves on Sunday.

In case you needed any extra warning, do not leave your iPhone 3G in the rain. It’s not waterproof. According to routine testing by the Fédération Romande des Consommateurs:
After a few minutes in the rain the device showed a whole array of technical problems: The battery drained rapidly, the iPhone overheated, the touchscreen and the speakers malfunktioned. And that’s not all: even when the cellphone was dry again the problems persisted.
I know what you’re thinking—of course leaving an iPhone to get soaked will ruin it. But apparently only two smartphones have failed the rain test, the Nokia N95 and the iPhone 3G.
The FRC believes that the culprit is the iPhone’s new plastic case. We believe the culprit is the idiot who left his phone in the rain. [20min]

Dell is loosing seven—yes, seven—new Latitude business notebooks this day. Rather than recount each model in detail and scrambling your brain since they (and their accompanying options) go in a million directions from ultraportable to semi-rugged, here’s the basic list of new features:
•Ridiculous battery life—some configs will go to 19 hours. •Wireless N, Bluetooth, Ultra-wideband, mobile broadband, WiMax and GPS options •Hardware disk encryption, Dell ControlVault, fingerprint readers and other security stuff •Full-frame magnesium alloy construction •Backlit keyboards, USB Powershare, DisplayPort •E4200 and E4300 have Dell Latitude ON, an instant boot mode for email, contacts, world wide web, etc., that supposedly will give you multi-day battery life via a dedicated low-voltage sub-processor
Get the full monty on every model here: [Direct2Dell]

Most gadgetphiles know that plasmas use more energy than LCDs but the Australian government want all of their citizens to know too. The government is rolling out a system currently in place for other household appliances but aimed this time at TVs. The vast majority of plasmas aren’t going to fair very well, and even some might be banned from sale. A Panasonic director indicated that none of their models will be banned but most of their models will score around a “three-star” if current models where graded; their LCDs would come in around a “four-star.”
This new regulation begs the questions when is something like that going to happen here in the US. With some states banning even incandescent light bulbs because of their energy usage, what’s to say high-consumption gadgets aren’t next?

If you’re one of the four people with a Best Buy nearby without any AT&T or Apple stores just as close, who also happens to want an iPhone 3G, you’re in luck! Best Buy has announced that they’ll begin carrying the iPhone 3G starting on September 7th. Jokes about futility aside, this actually ups iPhone retail locations by about 30% (up from around 2,200 to around 3,170.)
“We had a lot of work to do, obviously, to get in a position where Apple and AT&T would feel good about Ideal Buy Mobile carrying it, and that’s what we’ve done in the last 18 months,” said Ideal Buy’s Mobile head, Shawn Score, talking of the various upgrades that have been made to their mobile retail setup.
Like most things sold there, don’t expect to save any pennies buying from the Blue Polo Brigade: they’ll be selling both models at the same price points available elsewhere.
